Getting Ready For Christmas (Sutherlin, OR)

The weather is warming up and the snow has melted but it left its mark behind along with a collection of pictures.  Because we lived most of our life in the southern states, I have rarely seen snow before or on Christmas.  I think the movie and song "White Christmas" has always influenced my idea of the perfect Christmas.  But, that is silly.  The best Christmas is being with family and friends while sharing memories of our past.
One of my x-stitch projects
When I decorate our 2-foot tree, I spend a lot of time remembering past Christmas times with friends, family, and our travels.  Our tree ornaments have come from all over the world.  Some I made.  Some were made by friends.  Others are handmade that I bought for their uniqueness.   Needless to say, I can't see the tree because of all the memories!
Elf gloves from Izmir, Turkey.  German rocking horse from SIL
With so many memories, I thought I would share just a few with you.  The Santa below was made by a friend and co-worker, Mary.  We were stationed in Virginia and I worked for a furniture store's credit department.  Santa wasn't the gift.  He was a decoration on my gift.  Mary barely covered her bills and shared a small trailer with her daughter.  I was lucky to have her as my Secret Santa one year.  Mary always gave food usually some very delicious fudge or cookies and always added a handmade ornament on the gift.
I bought the handmade German Paper ornament
at Trier's Christmas market in Germany
Germany was my favorite overseas station.  Christmas in Germany was like a children's story book.  The decorations, the lights, and the outdoor Christmas markets.  Then there was Kathe Wohlfahrt's store.  Filled from floor to ceiling with Christmas decorations.  The details in each wooden ornament is amazing and brightly painted.  I visited the shop often and I have quite a collection from that store!

The reindeer was made by my SIL.  It holds a Hershey's Kiss so when you squeeze its cheeks, it gives you a kiss.  She made Santas as well as reindeer.  When the kids were little, I would fill each one with a Kiss for them to find.
The brass ring was made by a neighbor.  We were living in base housing in Florida and Sandy lived across the street from us.  Neither one of us could afford babysitters, so we would trade off time watching the other one's kids while she went jogging or I went to aerobics.
I have many more, but I probably should move on to what I found online.

I had to share this Cheezeburger page with you.  There are some cute and funny photos of all kinds of pets getting into the Christmas spirit.

Hmmm, I guess I need to work on getting our cats in the mood for Christmas.  Maybe I should hang catnip from the ceiling.  Wouldn't than drive them crazy!  I know I don't need to encourage them into climbing the walls.  They do that alllll by themselves.
Well, I guess I better go wake up the sleepy heads and see if they want to go outside before I start working on a project.

Happy Halloween! (Florence, OR)

Okay, I'm a little early, but I have been getting in the mood for Halloween all summer long between wall hangings, living in fog covered areas, reading, and...
....watching some old favorite movies like Hocus Pocus and Casper.

Books to get me in the mood for Halloween
I did a lot of reading this summer.  I discovered quite a few new authors, but I'll just talk about two for this post because they have lots of magic and fantasy to fire up anyone's imagination.

The first book is just the beginning of a great series filled with myths, legends, time travel, fantasy, monsters, gods, and Sci-fi....gosh, I could go on, but I won't...

This should be tagged “teens to adults” instead of “teens to young adults”.  I loved this book so much that I had to read the whole series.  This fast-paced series is about a legendary alchemist Nicolas and his wife Perenelle Flamel who actually lived in Paris in the fourteenth and fifteenth century.  You can visit their house, now a restaurant, at 51 Rue De Montmorecy, Paris today.

Throughout the series, Michael Scott’s love of history shows through his storytelling.  This story is well written with in-depth characters, magic, action-packed battles, time-traveling, sprinkled with historical facts and mythology.  At the end of each book, Michael talks about how he decided to write this book, the history behind his characters, locations, different myths, and unusual historical discoveries.  So many historical characters!  There’s Joan of Arc, St. Germaine, Billy the Kid, Virginia Dare, and Dr. John Dee - who?  Do a Google, he was well known during his time.  Then there are the mythological characters such as the Egyptian cat goddess - Bastet, The Sphinx, Prometheus, and Isis.

In “The Alchemist”, Nicolas and his wife have learned the secret to long life through the Codex book.  It doesn't keep them young, but it does keep them alive a lot longer than anyone else without the help of The Elders.  800 years later, the Codex has them searching for the perfect “Twins” while living in San Francisco, CA and trying to stay hidden from their enemy Dr. John Dee and The Elders who want to destroy the human race.

I can go on, but I would end up talking about all 6 books. Start with the first one. If you like it, you will want to line up the next five because you will not want to stop reading until you get to the very last one.

The Witch’s Daughter by Paula Brackston
This is the story about a modern witch Bess Hasksmith and her story to stay independent through the centuries from Gideon – the one who made her a witch and feels she owes him for her life and training.   I enjoyed the way we go back and forth in time from 1658 with the plague and witch trials to London’s Whitechapel district in 1888 to WWI to present day as Bess tells her story to a young witch apprentice.
This one does have some unusual scenes that might make some people uncomfortable.  To me, the scenes were a good description of what witch trial accusers would have claimed to have witnessed during that time.  I like Paula's writing style and I plan to read her next book soon.

Another fascinating bridge built by Conde B. McCullough in the 1930s.  This one is close to Heceta Head Lighthouse.  It crosses the river and goes straight into the side of a mountain's tunnel.  I can see this being a wonderful starting point for a time-travel story.  Cross the bridge, through the tunnel to come out...not where, but when.  The fog that day really had my imagination going.
UR Kidding!  National Cat Day
Because I have four cats, I just had to mention that today is National Cat Day.  Like it's not a cat's day every day, right?  Ours are so spoiled that I don't know where I would start telling you how spoiled they are....I do love my cats and could never ever live without them.  They are my best furry friends ever.

So here are a couple of LOL Cats that look very familiar to me.

Lion Around (Patagonia, AZ)

On Friday, Dan walked up on a Mountain Lion on the nature trail, about 30 yards across the creek from him and approx 150 yards from the motorhome.  We think it is the same lion we posted pics of just above in our October blogs, but some of the facial markings are different. Perhaps it was dried blood spatter last time and he cleaned it.  Dan shot lot's of pics and some short videos which he  posted to YouTube.
The YouTube videos came out fuzzy, even though on camera and computer from the sd card it is clear.  The camera was zoomed in about 30 - 40 X so it is shaky footage (handheld, no tripod or monopod). The one labeled Mtn_lion is the one to view first.

5 videos of the lion taken on Frid, plus other critters from videos we took last year:

The cat isn't stalking us. It might think Dan is stalking it - second time he has walked up on it. If there were not so many deer and fawns around we would  be more concerned. It looks well fed.
Dan and the cat watched each other for 10 - 15 minutes.  Dan called me on the cell phone, and I was able to walk over in time to see the cat leaving.
This makes Dan's 3rd sighting and Sandy's second within the last 25 days.
This is the photo from the first sighting.  Could be the same one..

My brother sent this to Dan and I.  Good one!

Sorry Mittens.  You need to stay outside.  Happy Trails!

Not So Wordless Wednesday (Florence, OR)

We leave the coastal area tomorrow - Thursday.  We drove to Sutherlin for a quick visit to our next stop at the Escapees RV park.

Driving back from Sutherlin on Umpqua Scenic Drive along the river, we saw a couple of herds of Elk in the Wildlife Viewing fields near Reedsport.  They were very close to the fence just grazing and totally ignoring all the people taking their pictures.

The males were in one field and the females were nearby in another field, but not close enough to see each other.

I'm so happy that I took along my 500mm lens and with some cropping, I got some great photos.
Smile!
The best part was watching the young bucks practice fighting.  Even though, they were not fighting all that hard...no rearing or running, more "Push Me-Shove You".  We could still hear their antlers banging together once in a while.

Had enough?  Yea, me too.  Same time tomorrow?
And another photos from Shore Acres...

NO! The First Day of Spring? (Benson, AZ)

Happy Spring Equinox!
It's a good thing we did most of our touristy visits last week because a cold front hit the area on Saturday night.  Sunday, we had sporadic rain and high winds.  On Monday, we were watching snow flurries.  I wasn't so sure today was going to look like the first day of Spring, but it is suppose to sunny and in the upper 50s.
Hitch has the right idea?
Big flakes!
Instead of The Cutting Board today, here's a cute photo with a great message.

Bisbee, AZ

We spent another day visiting Bisbee, AZ.  Built on steep mountain sides, this small mining town has turned into an art community.  We found the historic area interesting, not to mention, some of the people.  I only took a few pictures this time.  I was more interested in doing some window shopping.  Yes, it has been a looong time since my last window shopping.
We stopped in one museum filled with donated items from Bisbee residents.  There seemed to be a little bit of everything from old photos to typewriters to hats to....well, you get the idea.  It was interesting to see so many items covering the last couple of centuries.
Bisbee found a way to celebrate physical fitness with saving their stairs by challenging paying participants to walk or run up 1000 steps.  Excellent way to get people aware of fitness and have fun!
This is our second visit to Bisbee.   I'm happy to say the town looks like it is doing all right.  Business looks like it is doing well.  I first wanted to come here after reading one of J.A. Jance's Sheriff Joanna Brady series.  The series is based in the County of Cochise and Bisbee was mentioned in the novels I read.
Sorry, no birds were sighted during our visit to Bisbee.  Next post will have some new nature photos.

Tuesday Treasuries
In celebration of Spring, here are two new treasuries that I put together.  I do miss my garden.  Well, I miss the flowers and the birds......not the back-breaking work that went with it.  Anyway, cultivating this garden was a lot less work on the body, but still hard to put together because there are so many cool pieces of artwork to add to a garden.  Enjoy!
